In September 2024, five students from VSŠ Academia travelled to Olomouc, Czech Republic, as part of the Erasmus+ Combined Intensive Programme. Focusing on contemporary screenwriting, the programme offered a week of engaging workshops, expert-led panels and cultural exploration. Working with peers from different countries across Europe, students delved into creative projects, gained unique insights and built international connections. From inspiring lectures to city adventures, the experience left a lasting impression and fostered both academic and personal growth.

Preparations and arrival

The mobility started with a virtual meeting on 4 September 2024, where students were introduced to the programme and its objectives. Then, when they travelled to Olomouc on 10 September, they quickly connected during the seven-hour bus ride from Maribor.

“Despite the long journey, we shared stories and laughed, so that we had the feeling that we had known each other for years.”

On arrival, students were warmly welcomed in the student residence, where single rooms close to the city centre provided comfort. After settling in, the students explored Olomouc, and sampled the local cuisine and, of course, the famous Czech beer.

Scriptwriting and collaboration

The programme officially started on 11 September with a dynamic lecture by screenwriting researcher Claus Tieber. Over the next four days, participants participated in workshops and panels led by industry experts and researchers, including Gabriel Paletz and Gabriele Sindler. Participants came from five countries – Finland, Austria, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Slovenia – fostering a multicultural environment for learning and creativity.

The panels were structured as open conversations, allowing for active participation and sharing of different opinions,” said Nejc Mohar, Media Production student at the Academia. Similarly, Patricia Županovič, a Media Production student at Academia, reflected on the unique opportunity to interact with experts:

“We have also created a podcast featuring an interview with Luciano Georgescu, giving us invaluable insight into the screenwriting process.”

The programme also included screenings of high-profile films such as Ikarie XB-1 and talks with restorers and filmmakers. These moments, Patricia observed, created a deeper appreciation for the art and history of film.

A broader view

For many participants, the programme went beyond the academic. The charm of Olomouc, with its historical sites and vibrant cultural scene, left a lasting impression. “Despite the rain, we explored the city together and made unforgettable memories,” said Martina Karova, a student of Economics at the Academia.

The students also appreciated the connections they made, not only with fellow participants but also with professors and industry professionals. “I discussed the intersection of marketing and filmmaking with my professors, which broadened my perspective on the field,” shared Ognjen.

Summaries and reflections

While the programme challenged participants to step out of their comfort zone, especially those with limited scriptwriting experience, it also offered growth opportunities. “The practical exercises, such as creating scripts based on images, were fun and informative,” said Martina.

Group projects, such as writing articles or producing podcasts, highlighted the value of teamwork and intercultural communication. “Our group’s efforts led to the podcast’s development, a task that allowed me to use my skills and gain practical experience,” added Patricia.

Conclusion

The Erasmus+ mobility in Olomouc proved to be an enriching experience. It combined learning with personal growth and created a space for students to make connections and gain new skills. As summarized by Alen Kresojević, Media Production student at Academia:

“This experience has been amazing – not only have I met peers and experts from all over the world, but I have also gained contacts and inspiration for future collaborations.”

“For anyone considering Erasmus+ programmes, the student’s experience in Olomouc is an excellent recommendation:

Step out of your comfort zone, explore and embrace the opportunities available to you.”
