There are many competitors in the industry of internal combustion engines, each of them in their own way attracting and convincing customers about the quality, suitability and affordability of their product.

In my thesis, I will focus on the unification of two components (intake elbow and air mixer) of two engine displacements (2.2 and 2.9 liters). In addition, I will also explore the field of designing components (Unigraphics software (SIEMENS NX)) and implementing the respective designed part into the entire business system (SAP software).

Researching the field of materials used for components is one of the key points, because as a designer, I have to know different materials and, of course, also know which material will be the most suitable for the product in question.

In addition to researching the field of materials, I will also research the production processes for making the part in question, with an emphasis on sand casting and high-pressure casting, which is also the most suitable for the product in question and the required quantity of it.

Following the research on casting, I will also explore the area of product design for the die-casting production process, where I will touch on topics such as caster allowances, ejection angles, holes, threads, ribs, etc. When comparing the constructed versions, I will also devote a few words to the certification of internal combustion engines, as this is the area in which I am employed in the company.

When it comes to the certification of internal combustion engines, different countries have their own specific standards, but they are mostly based on and follow European directives. Individual countries have additional peculiarities within their system. A good example here is the USA and China, each of which has its own peculiarities.

The umbrella organization in the USA is the EPA, which applies “only” to 49 states, and then there is the CARB, which covers California. China, however, has special rules for the use of non-road machinery in the Beijing area. In discussing the results, I will tabulate and graphically show the engine change when these two design fixes are made.
