Academia hosted Dr Bourhan Mohammad Tashtouch, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Jordan University of Science and Technology, ranked in the top 2% of scientists in the world by Stanford University, at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. The title of the guest lecture was “Good practices and projects in renewable and sustainable energy in Jordan”.
The guest lecture highlighted the current status of renewable energy in Jordan, initiatives to promote its use, and the opportunities for future development in this sector. This was followed by an overview of the current energy mix in Jordan and its dependence on fossil fuels. Dr. Tashtouch presented government programs and activities aimed at expanding the use of renewable energy in the country. In addition, successful renewable energy initiatives in Jordan were highlighted, including the Mujib Dam hydroelectric project and the Shams Maan solar power plant.
The second half of the lecture provided a summary of Jordanian best practices in the field of energy efficiency and energy saving, including building norms and codes and energy efficient technologies, future opportunities for renewable energy in Jordan, the potential for increased investment in this field, the role of the private sector in promoting sustainable energy development, and opportunities for public-private cooperation.
The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the energy sector and the way in which the public and private sectors have dealt with it were also discussed. The lecture was followed by a short discussion on Jordan’s position in the region in the field of renewable energy and how it is working with other countries to enhance energy security and sustainability in the region.
