Architectural photography by Jože Plečnik

The diploma thesis introduces the architecture of the world-famous architect Jože Plečnik and the factors that influence architectural photography. I chose this subject because the architecture has always attracted me and I even fell in love with Plečnik’s Ljubljana a long time ago.

At the beginning, the architect, his life and works in Ljubljana are presented. Next, I go into detail about the symbols found in various motifs and elements on architecture.

In addition, wanting an extra challenge, I took up analogue photography. For the first time, I used a large format camera – a view camera. I learned about its history and usage. Using such a camera requires experience and extreme caution.

I researched the differences between analogue and digital photography, advantages and disadvantages, and how the view camera helps in this type of photography.

In the experimental section, the problems that arose while shooting and the method of developing the negatives are described. I have never tried to develop a negative before and here I had the opportunity to learn and face my fears.

I described the development process step by step, thus enabling a better overview for the readers. The thesis includes important factors that influence the architecture and an explanation of the use of different focal lengths. I took up digital photo processing, using various tools to get the perspective right.

For the research part, I interviewed two photographers Stane Jerčič and Miran Kambič. At the same time, I decided to conduct a short social voting poll to find out which type of photo attracts people more.

While writing my thesis, I have learned a lot and gained new experiences and new acquaintances.

I combined photography and architecture, which have been close to my heart for a few years now. In the assignment, I researched Jože Plečnik, analogue photography and the view camera which helped me to gain a better understanding of digital photography.
