Artificial intelligence has become an integral part of our lives. Its development has also had a significant impact on the arts (photography, film, music).
Concert photography requires experience and a good knowledge of the camera due to the constant change of light, the fast movement of the subjects on stage and the limited use of flash. A particular challenge in this type of photography is the elimination of noise. Noise is the random variation of brightness or colour information in photographs. It is most often detected as grain, is more noticeable in darker parts of the photograph and is associated with something unwanted. It affects the quality of the photograph. (Sankey, 2002)
The artificial intelligence tool can be very helpful in eliminating noise. This was particularly pronounced in high photos with ISO, where the image capture conditions were more challenging. Using different software tools such as Topaz Photo AI, Adobe Lightroom, HitPaw FotorPea, Nero Ai and Vance Ai PC, I compared the effectiveness of noise removal, detail preservation and photo quality. I made a comparison between their features and prices.
After processing the selected photos and removing the noise, the analysis followed. To make it easier to evaluate the results, I have collected all the photos in annexes at the end.
I found that Lightroom’s processes achieve very comparable levels of noise removal to advanced AI algorithms and that the performance of free tools is inferior to paid tools. In photos with high ISO, I lost some detail with noise reduction. The built-in noise reduction settings in the camera did not reach the same quality as specialised photo processing software.
Of all the tools compared, I was most satisfied with Topaz Photo Ai and Adobe Lightroom. Each of them had certain advantages and disadvantages.
Artificial intelligence has significantly improved the photo processing process and made photographers’ jobs easier, especially when it comes to removing noise. However, under certain conditions, such as high ISO, they still cannot preserve all the details in a photo. I believe that these problems will be eliminated in the future as Ai algorithms are upgraded.
