In the diploma, we focused on improving the clamping device for wheel brake discs used in rail transportation. Company X is one of the leading companies in Europe, which develops and manufactures various components for railway transportation, including wheel brake discs and related clamping devices.
We want to increase productivity and improve manufacturing accuracy by improving the clamping device. We also want to learn about different construction and design approaches to produce the most efficient and sustainable product. The aim of enhancing the clamping device is also to save on material and reduce processing costs.
For better understanding, at the beginning of the diploma, we did a brief overview of the basics of constructing, and the importance of clamping devices and introduced different clamping technologies. Modern design is strongly connected to various computer modeling and simulation programs that make it easier and faster to manufacture and adapt new and existing products.
For the most accurate and high-quality product, such as in our case the wheel brake disc, the suspension preparation needs to be updated over time and adapted to new technologies in production. Collaborating with other departments in the company is very important to develop and manufacture the most effective product that will ensure safe and repeatable clamping.
In continuation of the diploma, we did a short presentation of the wheel brake disc as the workpiece with all its features. In the main part of the diploma, we analyzed the existing clamping device and based on the findings we designed an improved clamping device.
With the help of 3D modeling and technical drawings, we prepared development documents for all clamping elements and presented their features in detail. This also includes all the fasteners, such as screws and support plugs, that are necessary to assemble the clamping device. We also prepared production documentation for all the raw pieces that need to be ordered for certain clamping elements.
To obtain all the necessary results, we also assembled and tested the improved clamping device. With the help of the production managers, we compared the productivity between the existing and improved clamping devices and presented the results at the end of the diploma
