João Paulino from the University of Rio de Janeiro on practical education at VSŠ Academia

João Paulino is a 25 year old design student at Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro – Brazil. Since February 2025, he has been attending VSŠ Academia as a part of the Erasmus+ exchange program. For João, this is his first time traveling to Europe, and he describes it as a unique and transformative opportunity.

„I never imagined I would live in a European city, let alone one as charming as Maribor. The experience so far has been incredible. As soon as I arrived, I was warmly welcomed by the locals with their courtesy and friendliness. The other Erasmus students I have met are also extremely friendly and this makes my exchange even more special.“

During his stay in Maribor, João will focus on promoting cultural exchange between Brazil and Slovenia and exploring his skills as a designer. He will be happy to combine his Brazilian perspective with influences from Slovenia. He hopes this cross-cultural approach will lead to unique creative outcomes and meaningful connections.

Living in the historic center of Maribor is a constant inspiration for Joãou. The location of the Academy places him in the heart of the city’s rich history and vibrant culture. Every day, as he walks along the cobbled streets, he feels immersed in the beauty and charm of Maribor. The architecture, the vibrant atmosphere, and the sense of history that surrounds him add to his experience. He also appreciates the city’s deep connection to the River Drava, where the flowing water is a silent reminder of time, movement,t and continuity.

João has really embraced his new environment and found his rhythm in Maribor. Enjoying the slower pace of city life and even falling in love with the cold weather became part of his daily experience. One of the most exciting moments was his first experience of snow.

„The cold weather is actually quite pleasant, and I couldn’t hold back a laugh when I almost fell on the icy streets. Every day here is like a new discovery, and I really embrace this adventure“.

João is excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. He looks forward to further exploring Maribor, meeting new people and continuing his personal and professional growth. For him, this Erasmus+ experience is more than just an academic exchange – it is a journey of self-discovery and cultural connections.
